The Holy Ghost Fell on All
Scripture: Acts 10:44Devotional Series: Why Tongues
Teaching: Why Tongues? pt. 1 (SUN_AM 2023-07-16) by Pastor Star R Scott
Acts 8 says, Thy money perish with thee…Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God” (verse 21). Now, we don’t see—and this is the one verse that we don’t see specifically stated that they spoke in tongues after having received the baptism in the Holy Spirit, but what it does say is this, “You don’t have any part in this matter.” Look at your Bibles, underline the word “matter,” and get this in your notes. The Greek word there, matter, is logos, or utterance. You don’t have anything to do with this utterance. There was an utterance that was taking place, there was some manifestation that was so great that this great man of God was offering money that he might be able to impart it. More happened than somebody just received the Holy Ghost and stood there and said, “Thank You, Jesus.” Something spectacular was happening, something supernatural was happening here, and the fact that in every other case, tongues accompanied, we can assume—and this is the one verse, with strong authority of this word logos—that in Samaria you had the exact same manifestations as you did on the day of Pentecost.
Acts 10:44 says, “While Peter yet spake, the Holy Ghost fell upon all them.” Now remember, I don’t want to get us too bogged down, but remember everything supernatural that happened to get Peter down there in the first place. Cornelius is praying, the angel comes and says, “Go seek a man up in Joppa named Peter. Have him come and he’ll tell you what God wants you to hear” (Acts 10:32). So, he has that angelic visitation, the message is given, Peter falls into a trance, and Peter is given the great revelation that the Holy Ghost was now going to be made available to the Gentiles. “Don’t call common…” (verse 15); amen? And so, we now find ourselves here at Cornelius’s house in Chapter 10, and it’s very interesting. “While Peter yet spake…the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.” The Holy Ghost fell on them all which heard the word. What a powerful ministry is taking place here. Cornelius having shared the vision, and he said this manifestation, verse 45, “Because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.”
“They heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.” Not only tongues as the initial physical evidence but another thing we want to learn about tongues here—listen—and they did what? They magnified God. Tongues magnifies God. Why tongues? Tongues magnifies God. Why tongues? Romans 8, we pray “according to the will of God” (verse 27). Why tongues? Because “this is that” (amen?), that God sent according to “the prophet Joel.” Acts 19:2 says, “Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?” he asked the Ephesian believers. They said, “We didn’t even know that there be a Holy Ghost.” And it says, “When Paul,” having then preached to them a clearer understanding of the benefits to them as believers, “had laid his hands upon them,” verse 6, “the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve.” So, here’s 12 that received the infilling of the Holy Spirit; 12 that spoke in tongues. No one was excluded, and neither should you be; amen? This great gift we should covet, and we should be seeking with all our hearts because of the effect that it has in the power to witness, self-edification, and corporate cleansing and unity as the church is built, purified, prepared for the coming of the Lord.
Father, we thank You for Your Word and we just ask that You would cause us to understand in this hour how necessary this infilling is, how necessary praying in the Holy Ghost is, how necessary the cleansing of our temples which are the temple of the Holy Ghost, how important this is in this hour, and how we would not grieve the Holy Ghost in this hour, praise God. Arrest our hearts and our minds, prepare us to stand, and we’ll give You all the praise, in Jesus’ name, amen.
