Why Seek the Living Among the Dead?

Scripture: Luke 24:5
Devotional Series: Resurrection Power
Teaching: Resurrection Power pt. 1 (SUN_AM 2024-03-31) by Pastor Star R Scott

One of the great aspects of this Resurrection story is seen in His desire to hunt down a doubter and reveal the truth to him.  We all have our “doubting Thomas” times in this walk, and Jesus doesn’t forsake us in it.  He prays for us, praise God!

In the twentieth chapter of the Gospel of John, we’re just rejoicing in all of these great things that’ve been done and the power that is manifested through that resurrection.  Verse 1 says, “On the first day of the week, Mary Magdeline came early with that other Mary,” the Gospels tell us.  “And while it was yet dark, they came to the sepulcher and saw that the stone was taken away.”  Now remember, this was the stone that weighed in the thousands of pounds.  It wasn’t a round rock.  They were like disks, if you please, and they were put in a trough, and when that that held the stone back was removed, it would roll into place.  Gravity would put it in place, and it was going to take a lot to remove it.

And here these ladies come, and the stone is missing.  And the Scriptures tell us very clearly that as they saw this, they were amazed in their minds, and one ran and told the apostles.  And Peter and John then followed, and it says that they’ve come back, and “Peter went forth,” verse 3, “with the other disciple”—John, the other Gospels tell us.  “So, they ran both together.”  The one, being younger, “outran the other” (John 20:4).  We won’t mention any names of those of us that are getting older and don’t run quite as fast as we used to.  But the Scripture says they stooped down, and they looked into this tomb.  Didn’t enter.  But Simon came, and being Simon… thank God for Simon; amen?  The “quick-to-do-it apostle.”  He didn’t wait around to question things; he just went out and did what the Holy Spirit was leading him to do.  “He went into the sepulcher and saw the linen clothes and the napkin that was about His head, was not lying with the rest of the wrappings that they used to wrap Him and prepare them for death at that time.  But it was folded up and put in a place all by itself” (John 20:5-7). So, we know Jesus was neat.  But they sat there in amazement.

One of my favorites in all of these things was where the Scriptures make clear that there were angels there, two angels.  And the one angel said, “What are you here for?”  And they said, “We’re seeking Jesus.”  And he said, “Why seek ye the living among the dead” (Luke 24:5)?  Don’t you love that passage?  That’s one of my favorite passages in that whole statement: “Why are you seeking the living among the dead?  He’s not here.  He’s risen!”
